  • He's not defending being a jerk he's just saying how to be true to yourself and in not be considered evil. 
  • everything else about him is tribunal and doesn't change 
  • malice- evil intentions
  • vanity- excessive pride in or admiration of one's own appearance or achievements
  • philanthropy -the desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the generous donation of money to good causes.
  • he writes this during the civil war while slavery still exists
  • don't act like your good if you're not actually good 
  • when something is good let's call it that because it matters  
  • the last piece in his essay says that he's not against charity, he is to do it if your being true to yourself. it's easier to go to be true to yourself
  • if you are a jerk all week and then go to church and pretend that your good and innocent and the best, emerson is calling that out as annoying
  • we more focus on the negative news than the positive
  • people aren't always good, but they do things in favor to try to get even 
  • we don't need assurance of what we already know we are good at. we don't want no "good boy" 
  • it's easier to go live in a remote place to think about your thoughts than do that in a crowded street 
  • the fact that he uses attorney is really specific 
  • if you know someone if they are about their thing, it's not even them talking anymore its automatic. this thing takes over 
  • not only do people to stop speaking for themselves also lose the ability to say no 
  • the people around us are the ones who give us the most pressure or inspiration
  • when someone disagrees with your this mean that they are insecure and scared about their own opinions you could either be defensive and attack them or ask them why have a nice conversation with them
